Future of Australian surfing burns brightly in Dalton Lawyers and Sanbah Cadet Cups presented by Arcbuild

(Dixon Park Beach, NSW, AUSTRALIA, 12 February 2017)

NORTH Narrabeen’s Jamie Thomson, Mudjimba’s Sasha Dalton and North Steyne’s Axel Rose-Curotta have announced they are surfers to watch during the weekend’s Dalton Lawyers girls and Sanbah boys cadet cup competitions at Dixon Park beach in Newcastle as part of the 2017 Surfest.

More than 60 of the nation’s most promising young surfers from Australia’s east coast converged on Newcastle in sweltering heat to ensure the action in the water was as hot as it was on the beach. While the summer scorcher pushed the temperature to around 40 degrees Celsius, one-metre waves provided plenty of opportunity for some red-hot scoring.

The 2017 Rip Curl GromSearch winner Sasha Baker received a unanimous endorsement by the judges in the 16-and-under girls division. The 15-year-old Coolum High student trains with the world renowned surf supercoach Martin Dunn and lists Connor O’Leary as her favourite surfer and her Mum and Dad as the biggest influence on her surfing.

“The comp was full of hot girl surfers and I was stoked to get the win. There were really good waves for the final,” Baker said.

Her next challenge will the Anditi Women’s Pro trials next weekend, where she will be aiming to repeat today’s performance to secure the only wildcard on offer to the Qualifying Series 6000 event.

In the 14-and-under boys, Axel Rose-Curotta from North Steyne racked up the best win of his relatively short career at Dixon Park today. The 13-year-old St Pauls Manly student who prefers science over other school subjects reckons he is dead keen to have a crack at Pro Junior events, “I’m excited to win here today. It’s been a great fun event and the waves have been really good and heaps fun,” he said.

Jamie Thomson from the traditional surfing stronghold of North Narrabeen took out the 16-and-under boys contest. Thomson attends North Narrabeen Sports High and was part of the team that claimed Surfest’s Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota High Schools Team Challenge in both 2015 and 2016.

The 14-year-old natural-footer came second in the 2017 Rip Curl GromSearch national final. He lists Mick Fanning as his favourite surfer and would like to follow in Mick’s footsteps.

“I’m really happy to win here against these guys. These are some of the best surfers going around. It’s been a great contest and the waves have been excellent,” Thomson said.
