Newcastle, NSW, Australia, Friday January 31 2014
After a very exciting day of surfing action on Stockton Beach, NSW the 2013 Orica Tag Team champions Frenchmans Boardriders finished the day with a narrow round one win over a star studded Merewether Black team that had Merewether Surfboard Club 2013 Open Champion and Burton Toyota Pro wildcard Travis Lynch as their anchor. With less that a point separating the teams the stage was set for some very close round two results.
Teams need to place in first or second in subsequent rounds on Saturday and Sunday to be any chance for a final spot on Sunday afternoon.
The Frenchmans team of Dan Frodsham, Dale Thomas and junior surfer James McMorland had to fight very hard in their round two heat in deteriorating conditions with a howling onshore northeaster making any open faced wave a surprise rather than the norm.
The round two match up with the Frenchman included the team they defeated in the 2013 Orica Tag Team Final, North Shelley Beach anchored by the multiple Wandiyali Indigenous Classic winner, Russ Molony. On this occasion the North Shelly Beach team got revenge pushing Frenchman’s into second almost doubling Frenchmans score. Frenchmans finished just ahead of the North Narrabeen ‘Skulls’ team. A third placing for Frenchmans may have ended their 2014 tilt at the Orica Tag Team title.
Action starts again at 7.30am tomorrow on Stockton Beach.
