Poncini scored an outstanding 9 point ride

Newcastle, NSW/Australia (Wednesday, February 19, 2014)

Laura Poncini from Australia’s Sunshine Coast placing 2nd and advancing through Round 2 Heat 3 of the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic. The heat was won by Hawaiian Briana Cope with Nao Omura from Japan eliminated in 3rd place. Poncini scored an outstanding 9 point ride late in the heat to advance and at 15 years of age, this is already an excellent result for the young Sunshine Coast surfer.

Headlining Newcastle Surfest are Gold Coast duo Joel Parkinson (Gold Coast, QLD/AUS), 2012 ASP World Champion and reigning Burton Toyota Pro champion and 5 x ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (Gold Coast, QLD/AUS).

The international field of competitors also features Wiggolly Dantas (BRA), Granger Larson (HAW), Dane Reynolds (USA), Marc Lacomare (FRA), Alana Blanchard (HAW), Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) and many more of the top surfers in the world who are looking to get off to an early lead on the 2014 ASP Qualifying Series.
