The Surfest Indigenous Classic, presented by City of Newcastle has been an integral part of Surfest for over 25 years. It has progressed from its beginnings as “The Kooris V The Cops” to now one of the most prestigious Indigenous surfing events in Australia.
In 2026, the event is made possible through the support of City of Newcastle, NSW State Government, AGL Energy, Awabakal, Funding & Grants Collective, Longwall Haul, and Hunter Water.
Featuring Open Men, Open Women, Pro Junior Men, Pro Junior Women and an Open Masters division the event has non elimination rounds that allows surfers a second chance format similar to the WSL world tour events. Organisers are proud that the divisions have equal prize money for men and women.
The event is a gathering of soul surfers that travel from Queensland, Victoria and Regional NSW as well as the younger generation of professional surfers that are establishing their surfing careers.
The two day surfing event starts with a welcome and smoking ceremony that features dance groups from local community and schools. This has become a popular highlight of Surfest attracting large crowds that participate in the ceremony.
Over the weekend there will be a First Nations Precinct that will showcase Indigenous art, storytelling and local businesses promoting their support for community.
Surfest organiser Warren Smith said, “Surfest is very proud to present the Surfest Indigenous Classic as there is so much good energy around the event and even though there is a highly competitive attitude from the surfers, this is a unique event where you see genuine respect and support from everyone in the event for each other.
“The welcome and smoking ceremony is indeed very special and to listen to stories from local Elders of what the area means to them is truly moving.
