The Lake Macquarie City Council Lifeguards took home the trophy at the 2025 Evolution Charity Cup, held as part of Surfest at Merewether Beach. But while the competition was fierce, it wasn’t just about who could ride the best waves—it was about coming together to support a cause that makes a real difference. The event raised more than $60,000 for Hope in a Suitcase, a charity dedicated to helping children entering foster care by providing them with essential items and a sense of security during a difficult time.
The lifeguard team’s victory was especially sweet, having added their name to the trophy for a fifth time. The funds raised from the event will go directly to Hope in a Suitcase, an organisation that provides children entering foster care with a suitcase full of essential personal items like toiletries, clothing, books, and toys. For many of these children, the simple act of receiving a suitcase can bring a sense of comfort and dignity during what is often a traumatic time.
Over the past five years, the event has raised over $500,000 for various charities, with Hope in a Suitcase being the main beneficiary since 2022.
