Newcastle, NSW, Australia, Wednesday 30th January, 2013.

THE 2013 Burton Toyota Surfest will be launched this coming Friday, February 1, at the Stockton Surf Club.

The launch coincides with the first official event of Surfest – the Orica Tag Team Challenge – to be held on North Stockton Beach from February 1-3.  The Orica Tag Team Challenge will be hosted by Stockton’s North Side Board Riders.

Not only is the Orica Tag Team Challenge the first Burton Toyota Surfest event for 2013, it will be the first time a Surfest event has ever been entirely run at North Stockton.

The launch will include the Member for Newcastle Tim Owen, Newcastle Lord Mayor Jeff McCloy, Kim Burton from Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota and a bevy of competing surfers. Representatives from the NSW government and Orica will also be in attendance.

With a whopping $10,000 up for grabs, organisers are expecting great competition over the three days of the Orica Tag Team Challenge.

General Manager of Orica Kooragang Island, Greg Holmes, said, “The company is delighted to support the event, which will showcase Stockton Beach and benefit the local community.”

Surfest organiser Warren Smith said the Orica Tag Team Challenge at Stockton is a great way for Surfest to broaden its engagement with the Hunter community beyond Newcastle.

“We have had the Port Stephens Toyota trials at Birubi and now we are holding the Orica Tag Team Challenge at North Stockton.

“The Stockton community is a historic beach side village that has consistently produced surfing champions since the 1960s.

“Surfers such as Damian Iredale, Mark Tickle, Lucas Gresham and Simon Law honed their surfing on the fast left and right breaking waves along the stretch of Stockton Beach,” Mr Smith said.

North Side Board Riders’ spokesman Paul Smart said the event will help achieve the aspiration of Stockton surfers to have their own premises.

“North Side Board Riders have a long term goal of building our own club house.  Our welcome involvement in the first ever Surfest event to be held at Stockton Beach will go a long way to us getting there,” Mr Smart said.
