Newcastle, NSW/Australia (Thursday, February 20, 2014)
Now in it’s 5th year, Hunter Business Boardriders (HBB) was proud to once again present the 2014 Shaw Gidley Surfest Charity Breakfast where we presented a cheque for $20,000 to Warren Smith of Surfest.
Held on Friday February 21 at Surfhouse, Merewether Beach this year’s event featured a unique audience with one of surfing’s pioneers of surfboard design, lifestyle and culture. Keynote speaker and presenter at this year’s breakfast is Bob McTavish, recently voted in the top ten of Surfing’s Most Influential People.
This year is a very special one for HBB and our members. In December 2013, the Contest Director of Surfest, Mr Warren Smith, revealed to the HBB event team that the Pro Junior event was unlikely to run. Corporate sponsorship wasn’t forthcoming from the business community and he needed some support. A short discussion and some quick maths sums later, the HBB event team agreed that this is precisely why HBB exists – To use business networks and events to raise money and awareness for surf related projects, charities and organisations.
So, it is with enormous pride that we revealed the recipient of the proceeds of the 2014 Shaw Gidley Surfest Charity Breakfast is the 150 plus junior male and female competitors from across Australia and the world in this years’ Surfest Pro Junior event. By ensuring the running of this event, HBB and every contributor to the breakfast is in fact a major sponsor and responsible for the continuation of junior surfing at international levels in Newcastle.
