Breakfast with champions at Merewether Surf Club Thursday March 11

EVENT SOLD OUT

HUNTER business people are urged to put the boardroom on hold and get down to the Merewether Surf Lifesaving Club on Thursday March 11 to breakfast with champions at the inaugural Hunter Business Boardrider's breakfast.

Four-time world champion Mark Richards and three-time world championship tour winner Matt Hoy will be joined by surf author Sean Doherty and SurfAid International’s communication director Kirk Wilcox to recount a few yarns and raise money for SidsKids in the Hunter and SurfAid International.

While MR and Hoyo need no introduction to even casual observers of surfing - whether in Newcastle or on the world stage – both have many yarns up their sleeves that can only get an ephemeral run away from recording devices.

While neither of these Merewether champs would ever set out to embarrass their millions of mates with their insider’s knowledge of what goes on in the rarefied atmosphere of pro-surfing, they sure aren’t past doing the same to themselves.

Another couple of raconteurs that will make your attendance a most memorable morning include former Tracks editors Sean Doherty and Kirk Wilcox.

Sean’s outstanding biography of Australian surfing’s cult uber-hero Michael Peterson - MP - alongside his no-holds-barred exploration of the Abberton brothers in The Official Bra Boys Story: My Brothers Keeper, sees him uniquely positioned as one of only a handful of the sport’s standout authors.

Kirk Wilcox, who besides being a former editor of the Australian surfer’s “bible”, is also a former marketing manager for Quiksilver - one of biggest surf companies on the globe. These days Kirk fights the good fight for SurfAid International, where he works as communications director. SurfAid is a non-profit humanitarian organisation that aims to improve the health, wellbeing, and self-reliance of people living in isolated communities.

There will be an auction of a print of Merewether from Newcastle’s widely-respected artist, John Earle; a surfboard designed by MR and the surfing trip of a lifetime to the uncrowded, warm water paradise that is Western Samoa.

Tickets are just $25 or grab some mates and secure a table-for-10 for $250. Tickets are: SOLD OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

Funds from the auction go to SidsKids Hunter Region and SurfAid International.

Get set for some tall tales and true - but leave the recorders at home - what is said at the breakfast stays at the breakfast!

Where: Merewether Surf Club
When: Thursday March 11, 7am for 7.30am start
Tickets: SOLD OUT!!!!!!!!!

The Hunter Business Boardriders Breakfast is supported by National Australia Bank, Shaw Gidley Insolvency Reconstruction, Coastalwatch and Surfing World magazine and is one of the official events supported by the Burton Toyota Surfest.
