Port Stephens Toyota Trials Saturday 20 February One Mile Beach Merewether, Newcastle, Australia (Friday, January 29, 2010).
FOLLOWING an outstanding response in 2009, the Burton Toyota Surfest will again offer aspiring pro surfers the opportunity to earn a place in some of Surfest's most prestigious events.
The Port Stephens Toyota Trials will meet at One Mile at 7am on Saturday February 20, with highly sort after wildcard slots on offer to four lucky surfers.
The trials event will be mobile and will be held at either Birubi beach or at One Mile - depending on which break is offering the best waves on the day.
"It's a great opportunity for the residents of Port Stephens to see some great surfing," Port Stephens Toyota's Kim Burton said.
"The wildcards give surfers the opportunity to be catapulted straight into the business end of the competition, where they will have the chance to surf against some of the best surfers from around the world," Mr Burton said.
As well as a wildcard into Surfest's premier event - the open-age prestigious Burton Toyota Pro - the Burton Toyota Trials will include an U/20's division. Those U/20s entrants will compete for wildcard entry into the Chiko Pro Junior.
And if that isn't enough surfing action, there are also opportunities for 14-years and 16-years age divisions to grab top seed spots into the Sanbah Cadet Cup.
Surfest chief Warren Smith said last year's success of a break from a long-held tradition - that is all Surfest events being held in the Newcastle area - made it essential to run the event once again in beautiful Port Stephens.
"It's great to take the competition to Port Stephens and terrific to get support from Burton Toyota.
"Last year's winner Paul Parkes from Merewether really set a high standard for the competition and with around 50 entrants, it was tough competition," Mr Smith said.
The Port Stephens Toyota Trials will be co-ordinated by Bay Boardriders, in conjunction with the Newcastle Surfboard Association.
Entry forms for this competition can be found on the Surfest website under the "Events" banner.
