Mark Richards to open Surf Art Exhibition as part of Burton Toyota Surfest THREE artistic surfers from Newcastle are teaming up next week to celebrate 25 years of Surfest with an exhibition of spectacular surf art overlooking Merewether Beach.
Novocastrian surfing legend and four-time world champion Mark Richards will be the guest of honour at the official opening of the exhibition Surfing The Years: 25 Reasons to Celebrate Surfest and Newcastle Surf Culture, on Friday, March 12, 2010.
Daniel Joyce, Chris Buller and Marc Adam, Newcastle surfing acquaintances who between them have chased waves for more than 80 years, will showcase their shared passion for their home town, its famous surf breaks and its rich beach culture over three days at the Aqua Cellar, downstairs at the Beach Hotel, Merewether.
Located directly opposite Merewether Beach, the exhibition runs over the final weekend of this year’s Burton Toyota Surfest.
Artist and illustrator Daniel Joyce, 37, has previously had works published in the popular surfing magazines Tracks and Waves.
This is the third year Daniel has exhibited surf-inspired works at Aqua Cellar during Surfest and, for the event’s 25-th anniversary, he has assembled a new array of paintings and illustrations, including surf-scapes airbrushed on canvas, surfboard art and panoramic sketches of Merewether’s famous beach and surf breaks.
Chris Buller, 50, has been an oil painter almost as long as he has been a surfer. With an accomplished eye for Newcastle’s distinctive coastal landmarks and much-loved beachscapes, Chris has exhibited along the east coast, including Port Macquarie and Newcastle.
Freelance graphic designer Marc Adam, 31, explores the ocean to the shore and the waves in between with his vibrantly styled landscape, abstract and surreal works.
Original works and prints will be for sale.
