The 2017 Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro Men’s is a World Surf League (WSL) 6000 event with prize money of US$150,00 that will held on Merewether beach, Newcastle NSW February 20th – 26th.

The Maitland and Port Stephens Pro is an event rich in surfing history. The Honour Roll features the names of many world champions such as Tom Carroll, Barton Lynch, Damien Hardman and Mark Occhilupo, Kelly Slater, Tom Curren and the 2013 WSL world champion Queenslander, Joel Parkinson.

Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Group General Manager Kim Burton said, “We are very proud to sponsor the 2017 Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro. It is exciting that Surfest will again have two 6000 point WSL QS events on in February, 2017. To see Hunter businesses come together through a crowd-funding initiative to ensure Surfest will have many of the best male and female surfers from around the world shows just how much Surfest means to the region.

Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota have demonstrated a long-term commitment to Surfest over the past 14 years. Our company has always wanted to see the event draw the planet’s best surfers. When we do see that happen as we will in 2017, the region and New South Wales reap numerous flow-on benefits that boost the economy.  In 2016 the surf arrived throughout the event making it that much more exciting. Now all we want is for similar swell to light up Merewether next February for what we believe is one of the nation’s premier pro-surfing competitions.”

Surfest organiser Warren Smith said, “We are ecstatic about the repeated success of our recent crowdfunding campaign that resulted in the return of the Surfest women’s event to a WSL 6000 status.    The fact that Kim Burton of Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota has again backed a WSL 6000 is indicative of not only the support of local businesses but tells a story of the importance of the event to Newcastle and the greater Hunter region.

We cannot wait to bring this world class sporting event to Newcastle and to the world live via www.surfest.com from February 20 to 26, 2017.”

Will Hayden-Smith the WSL Australasia General Manager said, “The Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota Pro is one of the most prestigious surfing events not just in Australia but world-wide, with the Mark Richards trophy being one of the most sought after on the Australian leg of the WSL World Tour.

This year’s event will be the 32nd edition and will once again feature some of the up-and-coming surfers from Newcastle, Australasia and throughout the globe who are given the chance to compete alongside elite WSL World Championship Tour surfers for US$150,000 in prize money.

The WSL thank the entire Surfest team, Destination NSW and Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota and all the other sponsors and supporters who help make this event one of the must-see events on each year’s WSL World Tour schedule.”
