BURTON TOYOTA KING OF THE BOX EVENT TO JOIN THE FESTIVITIES AT THE 2014 PORT STEPHENS COUNTRY CLUB SOUTHERN CROSS SUP FESTIVAL

SYDNEY (Thursday, 8 May 2014): Shortboarders and bodyboarders now have the opportunity to be involved in the 2014 Port Stephens Country Club Southern Cross SUP Festival with the new addition of the Burton Toyota King Of The Box event at Box Beach, Port Stephens.

The former stand-alone event will operate in conjunction with the 2014 Port Stephens Country Club Southern Cross SUP Festival over Saturday, 17th May and Sunday, 18th May.

The bodyboarding component will operate on the Saturday and will include two divisions – Under 18 Junior Men and Under 16 Cadets.

The shortboard component will operate on Sunday and will include two divisions – Open Mens and Legends; which will feature prominent locals that have continued to show form at Box Beach over the years.
The winner of the Open Mens shortboard will also win a return flight to Bali.

“The Burton Toyota King Of The Box event is the perfect way for locals to showcase their talent on their home turf,” says Surfing NSW Event Manager Luke Madden. “The Port Stephens and Newcastle area have an array of good surfers and bodyboarders, so we hope this event will be able to give them a chance to get their name up in lights.”

Madden added: “Linking the Burton Toyota King Of The Box event in with the Port Stephens Country Club Southern Cross SUP Festival seemed like the ideal way to allow a large range of disciplines to show their stuff over our contest window.”

The 2014 Port Stephens Country Club Southern Cross SUP Festival will kick off at Port Stephens from the 15-18th of May 2014.

Over 150 of NSW’s best SUP riders will participate in the four-day event, which will incorporate racing and surfing in a variety of different conditions.

This year, world-renowned big-wave surfer and waterman Laird Hamilton will pay a visit to the festival where the Hawaiian will do a meet-and-greet, interview with media and be there to support the sport of stand-up paddle.
The surf divisions for this years Port Stephens Country Club Southern Cross SUP Festival will be located at either One-Mile Beach or Birubi Beach, with the racing divisions to be staged at Shoal Bay, right in front of the Port Stephens Country Club.

Throughout the event, there’ll be an array of festival happenings taking place such as: free SUP lessons, SUP demonstration and coaching, stalls and SUP yoga. 2014 is the second year, the event has been sponsored by Port Stephens Country Club. Accommodation packages for the event, including board storage are available for competitors.
The four-day event will see the surfing element of the event run on Thursday and Friday with the racing running from lunchtime Friday until Sunday. Events in the racing component include: stand-up paddle board, 14-16 kilometer elite marathon, technical sprint race and a community teams race.
